It is with great pleasure that we announce the 1st World Conference and Exhibition on Biomass for Energy and Industry to be held in Sevilla, Spain, from 5 to 9 June 2000. This event merges the traditional European Conference on Biomass and the Biomass Conference of the Americas (Canada, United States and Latin America), thus becoming an outstanding opportunity for debates and transfer of experience. The Sevilla Biomass Conference will be the most important meeting in the Biomass sector worldwide programmed for the year 2000.
This event is supported by the European Commission, DOE – US Department of Energy, Natural Resources Canada, the Spanish Ministry for Industry and Energy, CIEMAT – Centre for Energy Research, Environment and Technology, Spain, SODEAN – Junta de Anadalucía, IEA Bioenergy, EUBIA - European Biomass Industry Association, the World Bank, FAO – Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and UNESCO – United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
Biomass
Biomass has been used as almost the only energy source for centuries. The industrial revolution, with its large-scale consumption of fossil fuels, marked the beginning of its decline. At the beginning of the 21st century, environmental and economic concerns are making this ancient resource a potential renewable resource for a sustainable society. Today, various forms of biomass energy account for approximately 15% of the world energy supply, but biomass represents the world's largest and sustainable energy source. However, the use of biomass as energy source in the industrial and developing countries could not be more contrasting. In the EU and USA bioenergy is increasingly used in modern applications with the highest rates being Sweden (16%) and Finland (18%), while in the poorest developing countries biomass represents over 90% of the energy use, mostly in its traditional and highly inefficient forms. The challenge of biomass technology development and market penetration must be taken up at the worldwide level.
The Conference
In this context, the 1st World Biomass Conference will contribute to the elaboration of innovative global strategies, projects and efficient practice rules for energy and environment by providing an information exchange and discussion forum for scientists, policy makers, technicians of biomass for energy and industry. The Conference will highlight new innovative concepts and projects in order to increase the social and political awareness. The goal is to enhance a change in worldwide resource consumption and promote sustainable development economically and socially for the next millennium.
The Exhibition
The Exhibition of biomass technology and services, an integral and major part of the event, will be held from Monday, 05 June to Thursday, 08 June from 9:00 to 19:30 and on Friday, 09 June from 9:00 – 13:30. The Exhibition will provide an excellent and cost effective opportunity for industries and biomass organisations to reach a wide audience and constitutes a fertile field for making business in the merging biomass sector. We would also like to point out that the Exhibition will be open, free of charge, for all visitors interested in the Biomass sector.
We are expecting more than 100 exhibiting companies and organisations from Europe and overseas: this is truly a global event! We believe that the exhibition together with the conference itself, will give a further impetus to a continuing and sustainable development of the global markets in biomass technology.
The Workshops
Several specialised Workshops on promotion and dissemination of successful biomass conversion technologies will be organised during the Conference. Those dealing with biomass in detail should not miss the opportunity to join one of the offered workshops.
